Young People

Ready to begin your adventure? There are now six sections you can join, depending on your age. The activities and opportunities vary but what is the same is that each will empower you to make friends, learn skills and try new things.

Squirrels 4 - 6 year olds

Beaver Scouts 6-8 year olds

'The best thing we did was swim in the rain. I wasn't even sure we were allowed to, but it was brilliant! I mean we were wet anyway, so I guess it didn't matter too much about the weather.'

Cub Scouts  8-10½ year olds

'The best part of Scouting is definitely the camps. I love every activity we do especially the national fun day event we went to!'

Scouts 10½-14 year olds

'It's good to get out basically. I wasn't too keen to go to Scouts to begin with but now it's a good laugh. All the activities we do are fun and I've made loads of great mates.'

Explorer Scouts 14-18 year olds

'To anyone who hasn't tried Scouting before, I'd say come on up and have a go! I think that most people don't really know that Scouting is about activities, friendship and meeting people from other countries. I've been in the Movement since I was a Beaver and I still love it!'

Network 18-25 year olds

'Last week we were out in the Brecon Beacons. This week we're up in Dartmoor helping some Scouts take their first expedition hike. Where else can you make a difference and have an excellent time yourself? Scouting - it's recommended.'

Scouts usually meet on one evening during the week, although they may also go to camps and other days out throughout the year.

Whilst the activities they take part in will depend on their age, each Section gives young people the opportunity to learn by doing. The main programme areas are: Outdoor and Adventure; Global; Community; Fit for Life; Creative; and Beliefs and Attitudes.  Scout Leaders are trained to deliver this programme, ensuring our young people stay safe while they enjoy themselves and learn.

Celebrating achievement

It's not all about badges but these certainly play a role. There are a huge number of badges available to young people across all sections of Scouting. Some of these might be to reward proficiency or endeavour in a certain skill area, while others might be for time spent in the Movement, for becoming a member of the next section, or for taking part in particular challenges or expeditions.

Each section also has higher awards, like Chief Scout's Awards, DofE Awards or the Queen's Scout Award. These awards celebrate high levels of achievement, and young people will work towards them for a large part of their time in the Section.
