Water Activities

We are very lucky here in West Coker when it comes to water activities as we are located within just a few miles of Sutton Bingham where the Yeovil kayaking / canoe club and Sutton Bingham Sailing Club are both located.

Both run independent membership schemes and their own courses and taster days but we as a Scout Association have our own session running from these clubs throughout the year.

Additional to this water activities feature heavily within the District, County and national activity days, camps and badge work courses. Below are just a few of the water activities West Coker Scouts have taken park in.

Canoeing / Kayaking

We regularly run active canoeing taster sessions and courses that are welcome to scouts adult helpers of all ages. Additional to taster sessions on camps and activity days our Scouters take part in the Paddlepower national award work programme that not only meets the Scouting award system for badges but also provides the young people and adults with qualifications for their own CV.

Sailing

Sailing session have been run each year by West Coker Scouts at Sutton Bingham sailing club using our own qualified Scout Association leaders and volunteers. We organise both introductory sessions and training courses covering a wide range of abilities and are able to issue nationally recognised qualifications.

Raft Building

A number of the leaders within the group have now obtained raft building permits so this activity is becoming more and more common within the programme. Not only does it teach the young people traditional scouting skills such as knots and lashings but it is a great team building activity which requires a large amount of co-operation and co-ordination as well as providing a lot of fun for all.

Dragon Boating

an annual activity for the Scouts and explorers as well as an activity the parents themselves really get involved in. Each year we travel down to Exeter canal to take part in a hours training with the qualified coaches before battling it out with each other in races up and down the canal.

A great fun activity for all ages!

Scuba Diving

Not an activity you get to do every day but an activity that some of our Scouts have got to do on some of the major national and international camps that we have attended. Run in small swimming pools lead by qualified Scouting instructors the young people have had one to one tuition on what to do and how to use the specialist equipment. A great activity and one that always causes a lot of excitement.
