Dorset Junior Chef of the Year, Katie Prigg, has just spent the last three days at Rick Stein's Restaurant at Sandbanks, where she has be learning new skills with her mentor chef, Peter Murt (head chef) and his team. As well as the valuable experience she has gained in an industrial kitchen, they will also be working on her dish for the final of South West Junior Chef of the Year on Saturday 6th October. Well done Katie the Group is really proud of you and good luck for the 6th October.

Summer Camp 2018: Lyons Copse week long residential

Over the first week of the Summer, the Scouts took part in their annual summer camp. They camped in patrols, cooked for themselves. Along side a trip to Portsmouth Historic dockyard the Scouts took part in a range of fun and adventurous activities including tomahawk throwing, paddleboarding, bridge building, assault course challenge, shooting, outdoor cooking and a day hike to name just a few. A great camp and can not wait for next years at Ferny Croft Campsite in the New Forrest.

West Coker Scout Group makes it 8 years in a row!

West Coker Scout Group made it eight years in a row when they won the District Camping Competition at this years District Camping Competition. Not only that but they proved themselves worthy against the rest of the County winning the County Camping Competition Banner at the same time. In total the two patrols picked up 5 trophies after picking up a fourth place and cooking competition trophies too. Well done all, you have done your Scout Group proud.

West Coker Leaders recognised in 2017 St. George’s Day Awards

Four West Coker Scout Leaders were recognised in the 2017 National Good Service Awards. The Awards which are acknowledged at all levels from District to nationwide have recognised our four volunteers for the hard work and dedication that they have put into volunteering with Scouting over several years. Awards were presented to Gemma Divall (Treasurer – Chief Scout Good Service), Rebecca Haynes (Assistant Scout Leader – Chief Scout Good Service), Heather Pitts (Beaver Leader – Medal of Merit) and John Haynes (Assistant Scout Leader – Medal of Medal). Congratulations to them all.

World Jamboree

Thank you to all who attended the Coffee morning on Saturday to help raise money for our three Scouts going to the World Jamboree next year, Elijah completed a Marathon around the Village and was supported by family and friends on some of the laps in a fantastic time of 4 and a half hours. Owen started his static cycle ride to the United States and completed over 100K on the day and Thomas has now decided his challenge is to row to he States about 3500 miles

On Saturday 14th October 2017 Scouts, Explorers and Leaders from West Coker Scout Group supported SOS Africa with hundreds of pounds of sponsorship as they successfully completed a sponsored abseil down St. Marys Church tower in Bruton. The event watched by many local residents and visitors saw Scouts from West Coker Scout Group, Explorers from Coker Crusaders and our supporting leaders abseil down the 110ft tower. West Coker Scout Group has a history of supporting SOS Africa over the years with events such as this charity Abseil. Two years ago our Scout Leader spent the night in Shepton Mallet Prison for the same charity. Although challenging the Scouts, Explorers and leaders had a great time and feel proud of their efforts. Funds are still coming in but the Scouts are expecting over £1000 raised for charity. Well done all who took part, you have done your troop and group proud. Major Tim Peak becomes Scout Ambassador

We thought you’d like to be the first to know that we’re announcing European Space Agency Astronaut, Major Tim Peake as a Scout Ambassador today. Best known for spending 186 days on the International Space Station and running a marathon in space, he is also a former Cub Scout and an advocate of the power of Scouting to help young people develop skills for life. The announcement is a great opportunity to raise the profile of Scouting - so please share our social media content far and wide! This announcement comes ahead of World Space Week (4 - 10 October), and we will also be launching new resources for leaders to use with their section from the UK Space Agency during the week. More details will be available in Friday’s Scouting+.

Congratulation to Katie Prigg on being presented with the Rotary Club are Young Master Chef of the Year award, Katie out cooked young people across the region, most being 2 or 3 years her senior. Katie's menu was set in true Scouting fashion, that is all cooked on two rings and what you would find in a patrol box at camp. It proves that you do not need electrical equipment if you know what you are doing. All the judges stated that her meal was to restaurant standard and would happily have paid good money for it. BRAVO Katie.
