Aviation Camp

Posted by Pete GSL on October 10th 2019

Over the weekend of the 13-15 September 2019, 4 of our young people attended Aviation Camp at Henstridge Airfield. They took part in a number of ground based activities learning about the weather and its impact on flying, how planes fly and navigation. This all culminated in an individual flight where they took the controls of a plane as they flew over Longleat. All of our young people had an amazing experience and collected 3 activity badges and their young aviation badge. Henstridge houses the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and they had a tour of the station, the air ambulance and heard from the pilot and the paramedics. A fantastic weekend of camping thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Summer Camp 2019

Posted by Pete GSL on October 10th 2019

This year’s Summer Camp was at Ferny Crofts, in the New Forest. A joint camp with Sparkford Scouts, Ferny Crofts is a National Activity Centre offering many outdoor activities. From leader led activities such as high ropes, zip wire, archery, shooting, the assault course, orienteering and crazy golf, to our annual day hike and our themed activity Australia Day. From Aussie rules football, didgeridoo making to inter patrol competitions including the infamous bush tucker food trial, downing a few crispy critters! The young people made their own pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven and took part in a 2 course cooking competition. And of course, plenty of socialising around the camp fire at night. A fantastic week of opportunities and adventures enjoyed by all of our young people and leaders.

West Coker Scouts send 2 leaders and 5 young people to the World Scout Jamboree 2019

Posted by Pete GSL on October 6th 2019

Over August 2019, 7 of our own Scouts were selected to represent Somerset Scouting at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia (USA). The 3 week adventure was the trip of a life time for the unit of 36 young people and 4 leaders. Over the course of the 3 weeks the unit took part in big city experiences in both New York and Washington, seeing the sights of these high profile cities and even experiencing a baseball game with the rest of the 4,000 UK scouters who travelled across. The main experience was of course the Jamboree its self, hosting 42,000 Scouters from all over the world, all coming from 180 different nations. Highlights included the main opening and closing ceremonies with its amazing light and fireworks shows, white water rafting, paddleboard on the lakes, a 3,300 network of zipwires, the international experiences villages showcasing scouting from all over the world, shooting and archery zones, water sport adventures, high ropes courses and the international culture day to name just a few. The experience of this international trip did not stop there. The 3 weeks was rounded off in style with 3 days in Canada for home hospitality and a trip to Niagara falls. The trip was amazing, an experience of a life time. Something that will stay with them forever and has helped them grow as individuals. Without the Scouting experiences created from early ages at West Coker Scouts through the Beavers, Cubs and Scout sections these individuals would never have had the opportunity to go to this exclusive event. For all those who went we thank West Coker Scout Group for all their support in helping our dreams come true. The next world Scout Jamboree in 2023 is in South Korea and we hope to support further Scouter to travel there and create their own dreams. For our Scouts and Explorers the international experience does not stop here. In 2020 for the annual Summer Camp our Scouts and Explorers are travelling to Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland.

Those who do not know, we have a budding culinary star in our midst, Katie Prigg has risen from a Scout Masterchef Team at the South West Regional Finals , where her team finished in third place but winning Best Desert in 2016, to achieving 2nd place in the Teflon Diamond Standard National Awards at the Waitrose School of Cookery, London in January 2019. From those humble beginnings in 2016 Katie has been excelled in catering, winning the Rotary Club Young Chef in the Local, District Competitions and then becoming a South West Regional finalist in 2017. The same year Katie and her West Coker team also became the District Scout Masterchef winners. 2018 saw Katie excel even further winning the Dorset Young Masterchef of the Year in the South West Regional Competition, the prize enabled Katie to be able to experience working for three days at Rick Stein Sandbanks Restaurant, with her Mentor Head Chef Pete Murt an experience most young Chefs could only dream about Now is 2019, Katie is still only 14 and has already achieved 2nd place in the Teflon Diamond Standard National Awards at the Waitrose School of Cookery, London. Katie hasn’t finished there February saw Katie as a Regional Finalist in the Springboard Futurechef Competition in Devon in which although not winning, she had fantastic feedback from the judges.
